We’re about 5 weeks or so until we reveal our American Idol for 2009! What an exciting evening!
The theme tonight, songs from the year they were born! Oh my…these kids…I’m old enough to be their dad! Oye. Let’s get to it!
Danny Gokey, April 24, 1980
Stand By Me
Danny is singing an interpretation of the song recorded that year. Ooooh watch the pitch at the beginning there Danny. This is a nice arrangement. It sounds great so far! Great outfit by the way. You need a bit more stage presence at this point of the competition. We’re weeks from naming our Idol and while I luv your voice, show me some moves!
Randy wasn’t a fan of the arrangement, but he said that Danny changed his mind. Kara didn’t understand, but said he made it his own and did it well. Paula just said WOW. Simon said the beginning was good, the middle lazy and the end was terrific, so overall great.
Kris Allen, June 21, 1985
All She Wants To Dance
You’ve started off twice in this format of being in the middle of a group of fans. It was an ok performance. Good vocals, but it didn’t move me as much as Danny’s song. The song was kinda, eh.
Kara was glad he picked an up tempo song, but he said it sounded like music funk, but still a fan. Paula said he’s one of the most likable contestants they have had. Simon said it was boring and indulgent and forgettable. Randy agrees that it was a bad song choice. He said he was listening to the music and not the singer.
Lil Rounds, October 20, 1984
What’s Love Gotta Do With It
Nice look Lil! Very “Tina”. Listen to the band Lil, you’re falling a bit behind the band. You’re singing the song in the strictest send in Tina style. Will it be enough to woo the judges? SO far this season you have just been makin it through, but I think the judges will say its a forgettable performance compared to the others. I forgot what she sang already…oh was that Tina Turner?
Paula said she looks hot tonight. Paula wanted her to take her own liberties, but she didn’t. Simon said it was like a 2nd rate copycat performance. Randy said they all love her. Kara wants her to make the leap from a singer to an artist.
Anoop Desai, December 20, 1986
You go Anoop! Nice ballad opening. Strong vocal, steady and on point. The tempo picks up a bit and you know how to work your performance to the audience and to the camera. Nice way to show that tender side. Nice arrangement.
Randy said he pulled it back and said it was very controlled and props to him. Kara said he controlled the song and not the other way around. Paula said the song choice was flawless and he showed true colors. Simon said he’s a yo-yo. This week was good.
Scott MacIntyre, June 22, 1985
The Search is Over
No piano tonight! This kid can play a piano and he can also play the guitar. Ok….I don’t mean to be mean, but it’s time to go. Yes you can sing, but I don’t think you’re Idol material, yet. With more experience and training, I have no doubt you can go far, but as far as Idol Season 8, it may be time to go home.
Kara said he took on a difficult song. She said there were parts that were too over ambitious and other parts that were ok. Paula said it was nice to see him not behind the piano. Simon said he should be back behind the piano – he said it was horrible. Randy said it was “ok”, but nothing more and that is the problem. He wants him to leap off the stage.
Allison Iraheta, April 27, 1992
I Can’t Make You Love Me
This song is so perfect for her vocal range and with that raspiness in her voice and from the first few notes you know this will be good. I like the performance, but I’m yearning for something with a little bit more tempo. It wasn’t bad, but I think the judges will agree it was just ok.
Paula said you hear one note and undeniably it is Allison. Paula said she gave all her heart and she made it her own. Simon said it was really good. Randy said she can sing her face off! He does want Allison to engage the public more. Kara said to take adult content and make it young is pure talent. She said let’s go make a record.
Matt Giraud, May 11, 1985
Part One Time Lover
Come on Matt, of all the songs??? The performance isn’t doing a thing for me. It’s kinda difficult to keep the volume on. I’m not sure what the deal is, but this is another situation where we don’t know which Matt you want to be? Are you Jazzy Matt or something else?
Randy said vocally one of the best, I disagree. Kara said incredible on every level – again I don’t agree. Paula said standing ovation and Simon said well done.
Adam Lambert, January 29, 1982
For an early age you decided you wanted to be a “performer”… is that code? [smile] Here we go again…the first few notes come out of your mouth and you know this will be something magical. We’re not wrong, this is THE best interpretation I have heard of this song. You will go far Adam, as far as to say you have a 1 in 3 chance at becoming this year’s Idol! Compared to Kris and Danny you have your own style and it is a style that will march you to the finale!
Simon speaks for the all the judges and gives him a standing ovation! This is a first in Idol history!
Adam, Danny and Anoop were my favorites of the night. Adam takes it for the night, no challenge there.
So who is going home? I think it’s Scott’s time to go, but America could send Lil home too. Will the judges invoke the SAVE rule tomorrow night? I hope not.
Lil will probably go home tomorrow.
