Even If You’re Not a Trekker or Trekkie…

May 8th, 2009 10:56 am | 1 Comment

If you like Lost, Alias or Fringe you should see Star Trek. Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman have done such a great job on “rebooting” Star Trek that you have to see it.

I saw it last night at the Irvine Spectrum IMAX and it was AWESOME! From beginning to end there was action and you won’t get bored. If you’re new to the Star Trek world, its ok that you don’t know the show, the movie speaks for itself. The special effects in the movie were outstanding. It was alot to fit into a 2 hour and 6 minute timeslot.

Abrams has masterfully rewritten the original story so well, you can’t wait for the sequel. One can almost say that with this movie, he could easily spawn off new movies with the direction this movie went. I felt the actors portrayed their roles well, especially the actors playing Spock and McCoy. But Scotty and Chekov were a hoot to watch as well!

I was seated a bit too close for my comfort level in the IMAX theatre. All the good seats optimized for IMAX were taken. I was to the left of center zbout 4 rows below optimum. So I felt like there were things on the right side of the screen that I may have missed. I want to see it in a regular theater this weekend to compare the IMAX version against the regular screen.

Yes, I am wholeheartedly a Trekker – no doubt about that, so I would have seen this film regardless! The lines for the showtimes after ours were filed already for the 9:40 and 12:30 showings. Then let’s talk about the lines for the regular screen version. It was a madhouse at the Irvine Spectrum last night.

I found this on SissyDude today…I had to share…

Note: For those that don’t know, the movie outtakes are from a movie called Jeffrey. The movie was released in 1995. On a personal note: I attended one of the premieres of Jeffrey in coordinated events across the US in a joint fundraiser for NGLTF.

The new Star Trek movie coming out in 2009 will be doing a fast food promotion with Burger King.

Did you know there were other Star Trek Movie promotions with fast food? I don’t remember any of these. McDonalds and Taco Bell both did promotions.

Enjoy!

Goodbye Star Trek: The Experience

September 1st, 2008 6:15 pm | 3 Comments

Well today is the last day for Star Trek: The Experience, the decade old venue at the Las Vegas Hilton. After 10 years in operation, the owners of the event, Cedar Fair, Inc and the landlords, The Las Vegas Hilton, has decided not to renew their relationship.

I have never been to the Star Trek: The Experience. For some reason I never went. Don’t get me wrong, I have been a fan of the Star Trek universe for as long as I can remember. I just wasn’t one of those guys who owned a uniform or had my own pair of Vulcan ears. I wasn’t a closet Trek fan either. To this day, I still find my self planted in front of my TV watching old episodes of Voyager, Enterprise, TNG and DS9.

When it comes to conventions and exhibits, I always shyed away. My friends Aaron and Davey convinced me to go to Star Trek: The Tour at the Queen Mary in Long Beach when it opened. The Tour was a multi-city traveling museum. It boasted to have actual props, uniforms and such from the actual productions. In a previous post, I talk about my disgust about The Tour.

I can only imagine that the Star Trek: The Experience was something akin to The Tour.

I guess I will never know. BTW, SciFi channel is hosting a Viewer’s Choice marathon of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Ashes up in Smoke

August 3rd, 2008 12:00 pm | 1 Comment

A privately built rocket that had three satellites and the ashes of several notables including James Doohan (played Scotty on Star Trek TOS and several Trek Films) experienced an “anomaly” during first stage separation and exploded.

This is the third rocket attempt by former PayPal owner, Elon Musk, that never made it to space. In 2002 he started SpaceX in the hopes of alternative space exploration outside of NASA. Two prior rocket launches in 2006 and 2007 resulted in failed rockets.

I’m really sad that “Scotty’s” ashes never made it to space.
