Jumping Ahead of Myself

March 7th, 2009 4:36 pm | No Comments

istock_000005204633xsmallSo it’s that time of the year again. Time to adjust those clocks 1 hour ahead in preparation for Daylight Saving Time. DST gives us more sunlight in the afternoons and less in the morning. I’m not a morning person by any means, so any reason for the sun not to blast my apartment is most welcome!

So don’t forget to change your clocks before you go to bed tonight. Your computers should change automatically, as well as your cable boxes, modern dvd players, DVRs and TVs.

Yes I’ll lose an hour of sleep tonight, and it will take me a few days (maybe a week) for my body to adjust to the loss of that hour.

Yawn…

Microscopically Oversized

December 6th, 2008 6:29 pm | No Comments

The space shuttle Endeavor was scheduled to return to Florida today but was delayed until Monday when the bolts used to secure the aerodynamic shield cone were “microscopically oversized”.

They will shave the bolts to fit then conduct tests to make sure the bolts will withstand the stresses of the flight from California to Florida.

The shield fits over the tail section of the shuttle as it rides atop a Boeing 747.

“Microscopically oversized” is an oxymoron right?

Endeavor Prepares To Lift Off in Evening Launch

November 14th, 2008 4:36 pm | 1 Comment

Space Shuttle Endeavor will be taking off from Cape Canaveral at 7:55 PM EST. Dubbed STS-126 this crew will be in orbit for 15 days and will be expanding the International Space Station (ISS) and installing a new water recycling system. The expansion will add enough space for a six person crew on ISS. Currently they can only host 3.

The Endeavor crew will be spending Thanksgiving in space with members of the ISS and they have enough Turkey meals for everyone on-board.

Launch in T-minus 21 minutes as of this post!

ISS Toilet is Broken

May 27th, 2008 6:33 pm | No Comments

Space Toilet on the ISSI came across an article this afternoon on CNN. The International Space Station’s single Toilet is broken.  To clarify, the liquid portion of the toilet is broken, solid matter waste is still working.

Luckily, Space Shuttle Discovery is on the launch pad waiting for an already-scheduled launch on Saturday. They will send a plumbing fix it kit on the shuttle.

In the meantime, the astro/cosmo-nauts will have to rely on a makeshift system to take care of their “Number 1″ needs.

So one has to ask. As there no Female astronauts? If you look at the picture (click on it to enlarge), one clearly can figure out where a guy would do his task. One has to also assume that the solid waste system cannot take liquids, so where does a girl go when she’s gotta go on the ISS?

We’ve Landed on Mars…Again

May 25th, 2008 5:03 pm | No Comments

Phoenix successfully landed on the Red Giant as the latest NASA/JPL explorer vehicle looks for life on Mars.

Phoenix Mission Control

At approximately 4:55 PDT, Phoenix landed after the “7 minutes of terror”. The 7 minutes is the time it takes for the orbiter to enter the atmosphere, deploy parachutes, heat shield deployment and then final landing.

At 4:51 PDT, signal received that parachutes did deploy and they have a 32k signal lock on Phoenix communications array.

The Phoenix successfully landed and NASA/JPL jumps for joy!

Atlantis Lifts Off to the ISS

February 7th, 2008 6:07 pm | No Comments

Atlantis lifted off for an 11 day mission to the International Space Station from Cape Canveral at around 4:20pm EST.  Flawless liftoff.  I need to make a trip to Florida to see a liftoff live before the Shuttle fleet is retired in 2 years. This mission is labeled as STS-122.
