Thursday’s weren’t meant to be like this

March 30th, 2006 10:55 pm

What a weird day it was today. Over the last couple of days I have been feeling a little sick. Nothing serious. Smidge of nausea at times, spot of dizzyness, hard to concentrate – like I said, little doses of each, nothing overwhelming…yet! For those who read my blog entry last yesterday I had made mention that I was kinda seeing someone I wanted to date, but was turned down. Earlier in the “exploration” stage, we talked about slowing things down, he went away for a little trip, he came back and I said, let me treat him to a nice dinner, some fun times, hang out – I’m going to ask him out on an official date. Well, I was turned down. He said that we would probably be better off as friends and not as something more. I kind of expected to be turned down and I thought I prepared myself (is anyone “really” prepared) to be let down. I cried a little bit. But I picked myself up and had to convince myself that being friends had to be better than not being friends at all. So after alot tossing and turning for a couple of hours, I finally fell asleep.

I got up at my usual time (5:50 am) and this wave of anxiety came over me. I laid there for a few more minutes (you have to love the snooze button) and finally kicked my feet over the side of the bed and got up. In the shower, I replayed the events of the evening before and got sad again. “WAKE UP SCOTT!” I said to myself, I had a very busy day ahead of me and needed to focus.

Since I haven’t written in my blog in a LONG time, none of you probably know that I was assigned to project manage a deployment of new computers. This project would be at no other than my previous employer before I took my culinary sabattical – Mattel. Yep, back in the land of Barbie and Ken, Hot Wheels, Harry Potter and the Justice League. My day was pretty busy, had a late lunch and everything started to unravel right in front of me. I can’t go into any real details on here, but suffice it to say, I was shocked at how my day ended.

Suffice it to say, I’ll be moving to a new somewhat-related project. My hours will be shifting to swing shift and I probably will have about another 3 weeks at Mattel. What I have enjoyed so much about this project is that I got to shine at two things I do best.

1. I know how to manage a project
2. I got to work with Macs

Starting next week I will be moving to the Windows side of the house, putting on my XP hat and deploying Dell Workstations and Desktops. Of course, I will put my skills at 150% and be the best damn deployer they’ve ever seen! But I have to say, that moving away from the Macs will be sad. The whole time I sat in the car riding home (I carpool) I pouted and pouted. But there is nothing I can do except do the best job I can do for my clients. I got home and plopped myself on top of my bed. I stared at the popcorn ceiling (I sooooo want to scrape it off since we moved into the house in 1977) and fell asleep.

I woke up an hour later and went to my Mac Mini and visited iTunes. It was time to start my download of Top Chef. Do you know about this show? Its a culinary reality show on Bravo. Its produced by the same folks who do Project Runway. THIS is the way a reality series on cooking should be down. Although I LOVE my Food Network, their show “The Next Food Network Star” PALES in comparison to Top Chef. This is the third week of the series. Now there are a few favorites that I have in this competition. My top two are Harold and LeeAnn. Harold (who is kinda cute) is a restaurant chef and LeeAnn is an instructor at the French Culinary Institute in New York. For those who don’t watch the show, each week the contestants are given a Quickfire Challenge. Tonite they have $20 and have 30 minutes to shop for ingredients to make a dish that will be solely judged on taste and presentation. They are in the Mission District of San Francisco, home to many speciality shops and ethnic foods. They are told the challenge and are being led to their “store” when they stop in front of a gas station. They have to make their dishes based on foods available in the quickie shop of the station. Come on, where talking chips, soda, donuts, prepackaged foods, you name it. We’ve all been in one and know exactly what’s in these shops. Any way….I really came online to write about one of the contestants. His name is Stephen. What a stuck up, pretentious ass! He’s 24 and full of himself. I can’t stand this person. On the flip side, the last two weeks, he wowed me with this presentation technique of presenting “fruit on a plate”. But his holier than thou attitude has to be stopped! well he ended up in the bottom three chefs tonite. I hoped so hard that they would kick his ass off the show for being such a pompous ass to a group of housewives and working moms. The challenge was to make a dish that could be made and finished in the microwave the next day. He made some Oaxacan/Japanese tamale thing that just sounded awful. He tried to wow the audience with all this technical terms and infuse this with wrap with that. Unfortunately he didn’t get booted. Candice did. Candice was the least of the experienced chefs in this series. She had alot of spunk and drive and I liked that about her. I’m sorry to see her leave, but I have to admit that her quiche did not look appetizing and we all know that pastry anything in the microwave is asking for trouble.

Well I’m headed to bed. It’s Friday tomorrow and payday, thank God. have a good nite everyone and type to you tomorrow.
