DC Day 2 Wrap Up

December 9th, 2005 11:57 pm | 2 Comments

It’s technically 11:57pm on the West Coast, but from where I’m at right now, its 2:57am. Being three hours off sucks, especially in the morning. I couldn’t get up until at 12 noon today. Brian and I each got ready and I found myself stuck at the TV watching the Food Network. We decided that we had to get something to eat, then head to Target and then get home to get ready to go out. Friday nite is Bear Nite at Titans.

We decided to keep it quick and cheap and went to Potbelly Sandwich Works. They have a sandwich called the “A Wreck” sandwich. Basically ham, roast beef, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, oil and vinegar with salt and pepper on a toasted roll. Mmmmm…my favorite. I also got a Diet Coke, UTZ Chips (they don’t have UTZ chips on the west coast) and a potato salad. Brian got an Italian with everything, no mayo. We talked about how that was our hangout place. When we were roommates, we used to go there all the time. After Potbelly’s, we went across the street to Target. I was in search of something a little more warmer to wear. I picked up a nice warm, yet breathable jacket. My next dilemna was finding a scarf that wasn’t “frilly”. THey didn’t haven anything except for scarves with patterns I didn’t care for. We walked over to the Christmas section and I wanted to get some small gifts for Susan, Karen and Daniel at Sur La Table. Karen still doesn’t know I”m in town and I want to surprise her. I picked up 3 small stockings and filled them up with candy canes and chocolate, then I bought each of them a Christmas ornament. I looked over and saw more scarves! They were solid colors and PERFECT! Except for the fact that they were $25 a piece! They were made of cashmere and cost a pretty penny. I mean I do have a scarf. It was a scarf I fond in a hallway in a building I used to live in when I was here in DC last. Someone had dropped it in the hallway and I picked it up and hung onto it. Well upon closer inspection, it turns out its a ladies scarf. There is a woman’s name on the label. Its either the designer of the scarf or the owner. What I like about it is that it is solid grey and warm. I mean, that’s the important part right? Well we checked out of target and headed home to get ready for Titans.

When we got home we changed and headed out the door. The jacket fit perfectly and I looked all cute tonite! Did I tell you I got a haircut the other day and the stylist got it PERFECT!!!! I think I found my new stylist. We left for Titans around 7pm and got there at 8pm. We must have circled for 15 minute looking for a parking spot. Patience prevailed and we found one less than 2 blocks from Titans. Once we got to Titans, we climed a flight of stairs to a very crowded, very happy crowd of guys! Everyone looked happy, having fun, no one had attitude, it was nice. We headed to the back to check our jackets. Brian got my drink and a beer. I had a Ketel One and tonic with a twist of lime. Well…i had three of them. I was having a good time. I was supposed to meet Sean there (the one I mentioned about in a previous blog), but he was no where to be found. I was bummed. It got to be around 9pm and I told Brian let’s go to Sur La Table real fast before the end of the night so I could see a dear friend and my old assistant at the cooking school, Susan Adler. I talked to Susan earlier in the day and found that she is heading to Miami on Saturday to attend her daughters graduation from college. I wanted to make sure to see her before she left. We arrived at Pentagon Row and walked up to the store. THey were already closed, but I knew that the school staff would be in the kitchen. There they were and some familiar faces!! I knocked on the window and they all looked over and with a surprised look Susan came over and let me in!! OMG, it was like I never left. Helping out on staff that night was Ed ( a nice guy who has been volunteering at the school since it opened in 2001), Cynthia (a dear soul) and Beverly. It was so nice to see some familiar faces!! They were in the midst of cleaning so I didn’t get a chance to talk with Susan much. I met one of the store’s new floor leads, Jonathan who was closing that night. Karen had gone home at 6 and Daniel was already gone. I left a present for both of them on their desks. After much hugging and Holiday wishes, it was time for Brian and I to leave. It was really, really good to see Susan. I’m glad I got to see her before she left for Miami.

Afterwards, we walked around Pentagon Row and the ice skating rink was setup in the middle of the plaza. It was a full house in the rink. We decided we were hungry and went to Asia Bistro. We had miso soup to warm our souls and some very good sushi! After dinner, we thought about going back into the city, but decided to go home and watch the DVD of The Fantastic Four. So other than the nice eye candy that Chris Evans gives in the movie, the movie was pretty much dull. I was disappointed.

Well that’s wraps up my Friday in our Nation’s capitol. Tomorrow we have planned to see Daniel, Scott Shumaker, karen at the store and hopefully Sean. We might go to Zigfields tomorrow nite and on Sunday we have planned the Dupont Farmer’s Market and then off to Dim Sum in Chinatown!

Giada de Laurentiis, I miss her

December 9th, 2005 10:35 am | No Comments

Well it is Day II of my trip here in DC. Now, I have been living back at home with my parents since late July. That’s almost 5 months. 5 months of NO CABLE/SAT. Today, for the first time in almost half a year, I watched my Food Network. And what was the first show I saw??? Everyday Italian with Giada de Laurentiis. I LOVE GIADA. It was so therapeutic for me to watch and listen to her cook on her show. Today she makes a simple tomato sauce. It was just like we made in cooking school!

We’re off to get some lunch in the city. It snowed last nite and there is a blanket of white show everywhere!

My DC Trip, Part I

December 8th, 2005 11:55 am | 3 Comments

Well I’m at LAX, one of the nation’s most busiest airports. It’s Thursday and I’m sitting in a cafe waiting to board my flight. I was originally scheduled to fly out of Long Beach LGB airport at 7am this morning with a connection thru DFW. Well I went on AA.com this morning and there was a special weather alert listed for DFW. American Airlines has a policy that if they issue a Special Weather Alert, you have the option to re-route your flight on the day affected by the weather bulletin. So I called in and asked if there were any direct flights from the LA to DC without going thru Chicago ORD or Dallas DFW. They had a flight leaving LAX for IAD at 12:50pm arriving in DC local time around 8:36pm. I took it!

So American Airlines set me up and changed my flight to LAX! American Airline ROCKS!! So now my flight/air time has been cut to a 4 hour 44 minute flight! I also got a seat in the back of the plane, so in case I get “LOST”, I will end up in the other side of the island with Annalucia.

I’m sitting in this crowded cafe next to my gate in Terminal 4 at gate 42A. It has little individual tables with dialup connections, but I have a pay as you go Boingo account, so I’m online wirelessly. I would think that a place like this would have ethernet connections at the table rather than just dial up. There is a wireless connection, but its from the cafe above us apparently. They have a menu and their is waitstaff here. I had the Chicken Caesar salad and a diet coke.

With as many people that are in here, I’m sure they would make money even if they charged for the ethernet access at the tables. Oh well….maybe I’ll come into some money and open a competing cafe across the hall!

I am so looking forward to my trip. 4 days of no parents, no work and no worries. I plan on meeting up with old friends and colleagues and just having fun. Hopefully my time in DC will prove restful. I hope that I will have a chance to meet up with Archer of archerradio.com. He and I had talked about doing a show together.

Tonite, I don’t get in until 8:36pm. I think we will go to Target near Dulles airport so I can pick up a scarf and gloves. Its COLD in DC! :) However, my winter clothes might be in Brian’s closet. I do have the iPod with me but I forgot to bring my iTalk. I thought maybe I could do a remote podcast.

Well. its 11:54 and my flight boards in 20 minutes. I need to wrap up some work emails then back to the gate for me! See you on the ground in DC.

Why am I going you ask? I’m going to Washington DC for some much needed time off and time away from the parents.

Type to you in a few hours!

More Video on iTunes!

December 6th, 2005 11:22 pm | No Comments

Sci-Fi signed along with NBC and the USA Network to offer programming of some of their shows on iTunes. The Sci-Fi channel has Battlestar Galactice available for download now. I’m sure they pleaded left and right with the producers of Stargate to offer downloadable episodes. I hope they do it!

I never really cared for downloads of That’s So Raven, but more programming may be due soon from Disney and ABC. I have missed a few episodes of Lost this season and iTunes was right there the next day to fix my dilemna.

Yea for Apple!

p.s. Attention Paramount, let’s see Voyager and DS9 on iTunes!

Tinkering with Macs all day

December 6th, 2005 11:03 pm | 2 Comments

Well, for the first time in over three years, I have been fully immersed in a professional Mac environment. My company has a very large magazine conglomerate for a client. Today was day one in an Active Directory migration of all their pcs and Macs. I was put in charge of the Mac migration working with one of their in-house engineers. Today, I was reminded of what my life was like prior to my sabattical to the cooking world. Today I did 15 Tiger upgrades and learned abit about Active Directory on both platforms.

I decided today I want a Powerbook G4 for Christmas. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, as Christmas is three weeks away. I’m going to try and set aside some money to buy a used one on eBay, craigslist or an Apple reseller. I think I can come up with half of what I need to buy one by Christmas. Maybe I should have a marathon and raise funds.

Ok. I need to do this. If I’m going to be serious and taken seriously as a professional Mac tech, I need to have a Powerbook G4. Thank god my nephew borrowed my old iBook – I’m still running on Panther. Thank God I read alot of Mac sites and magazines. But I walked in there today and knew my shit. It would have been embarassing to walk into a room of Mac techs and running on technology that is over three years old. I need to be on top of it.

About 25% of the staff at this particular office have Powerbook G4’s or at least an iBook G4 – a few smatterings of G5’s and alot of eMacs and iMacs. It was so nice to work on them. I luv the keyboard on the Powerbook. I’m not sure why I never noticed that they have metal looking keys on the Powerbooks. It’s so nice…
