Trying to get caught up
I have to say that today was one of those days where I felt like the world was about 30 minutes ahead of me and I couldn’t catch up. I had no energy and it felt like it was being sucked right out of me. I didn’t get up today until about 8:30 and did my usual rounds of Charmed and ER on TNT then showered and headed into work. I headed down the corridor to the elevator lobby and realized that there was only one elevator working this morning. The elevator showed upand literally stopped on every floor on the way down. When we got there, Nancy was in the office and she came around to the front to help one of the residents. I keep forgetting how short she is..but so full of energy. The minute I stepped outside I felt this wave of humid hot air hit me. Ugh..another one of those days.
I got in the car and just sat there. I started up the car and cranked the AC up to full and just sat there. I asked myself “Why am I going in to work today”. Sat some more trying to cool down. Then I said to myself “Maybe I can take today off.” But then reality set in and I started the car and headed in. 66 was clear all the way to Crystal City. No delays.
I walked into Sur La Table to find that Susan had just arrived and was already on the phone calling customers about cancelled classes. We had a Private Event that night and we had to prepare for it. A law firm, Heller Ehrman, was doing a team-building event with their summer associates and partners. I stepped into the office to find Karen and Mike. Everyone looked hurried. Mike came in and said where is Rick and Danie? I had no clue. Karen then said that they may have both gone on break. I walked onto the floor in search of Danie. Danie left the store a few weeks back and has come back to work one day a week. It was so good to see her. She got new glasses and she cut her hair shorter.
remember that “lag” I was feeling this morning..well, it intensified at work. I was buried in my compter and I could feel the world around me moving was faster than me and I felt like if I tried to jump into it I would spin off the edge. When you were a kid, did you ever place objects on your record player and see it fly off? Well that’s what I thought would happen.
Mike, Rick and karen were in a meeting for a good part of the afternoon going over management stuff. Susan was in the kitchen getting things ready for tonite’s class. Mike sensed that I was a bit off and wanted to know what he could do and I didn’t know if he could help.
The rest of the afternoon and evening were pretty routine. Carla and the team showed up at 5pm to get mise en place ready for the class. Jennifer from the law firm showed up around 5:45 with the wine and beer. She told me that only 12 out of the 16 planned students would be here. We had to adjust seating arrangements and pair down the recipes a tad. Things alrways get really tense before the start of a private party. I get all obsessive about how things should run and what impression we’re going to make on these lawyers. I tend to get all bossy and start barkin orders out. I need to do better. Susan is a hard worker and she has been by my side for almost a year now. I hope she knows how much I value her participation and character at the school.
The event ran way late. Rich and Karen had to stay late since the students didn’t get a break until 9:15. Meanwhile, back in the office I was reading emails and Kendra Bailey from Richmond emailed to say that she saw me on television the other night. A news crew from WRIC in richmond came to Sur La Table in Arlington to runa story about retails shops that were coming to Richmond for the first time. We are opening another SLT and SLT Cooking School in the Richmond area in a new shopping center called the Stony Point Fashion Centre. Tiffany Woods and her cute cameraman Chris showed up last week to interview members of SLT and to get some shots of the store. Mike was in Seattle and Karen didn’t want to be on camera, so the task fell to me. l called Tiffany at WRIC to request a copy fo the story.
Things didn’t wrap up at work until about midnight. I headed down to the car only to find that I left the car keys on my desk. I went back and got them and headed home. I called Daniel tonight hoping he would be awake. He wasn’t. Hope I get to talk to him tomorrow.
When I got home, I was happy to see that Lee was back. Lee had to go home to South Carloina due to a death in the family. Marc couldn’t go down with him because of work. Marc and Lee were already asleep when I got home. I hope to see Lee tomorrow night. I need to go to bed myself. Its way past my bedtime.
